How to Brighten Dark Spaces

A home with bright natural light is ideal, but this isn’t always possible in some cases, especially for those living in large cities. Here are some ideas to brighten a space if you have a dark apartment or house.

Mirrors

Strategically place mirrors near a window to reflect natural light throughout the space.

Artificial Lighting

Have multiple lighting options on dimmer switches in your space. Uplighting is an excellent option to illuminate dark corners. Indoor string lights can create a cozy subtle glow that you can even leave on during the day to brighten a space.

Opt for Lighter Color Furniture

Heavy dark wood furniture can make a space feel smaller and darker. Balance a dark room with lighter colors. If you have a dark couch, there is no need to purchase a new one; you can get a light color couch cover.

Paint Color

Use light-colored paint for the walls. White paint reflects light the best, which can be too jarring for a bright room, but it is a good choice for dark rooms.

Add Plants

Live plants add vibrancy and brighten a space. There are many options to choose from that tolerate low-light conditions. Bright-colored or white fresh-cut flowers are a great option as well.

Choose bright color artwork

Opt for bright color art rather than art with dark themes.

Get rid of clutter

Excess clutter and rooms crammed with too many items make a space feel smaller and darker. Ensure breathing space between furniture pieces and that nothing is too large for the area.

Clean Your Windows

Clean your windows frequently for clarity and avoid heavy window drapes. Lightweight and light-colored curtains give an ethereal feel and allow light to filter through.
