Feng Shui for the Bedroom

The main bedroom in a house is one of the most important rooms from a feng shui perspective. We spend much of our lives sleeping, so creating a comfortable and harmonious space is a good idea.

Here are six essential principles for a good feng shui bedroom:

A bed with a Solid Headboard

A solid headboard made of wood or upholstered will create a sense of security and support. You will subconsciously feel more at ease and, therefore, will be able to feel more relaxed.

Bed off of the floor, free from clutter underneath

Having the bed off the floor allows the air to circulate and the energy to flow properly. It is best not to use the space under the bed for storage. If you live in a small space and absolutely need to utilize it, try only to store soft items such as extra bedding, blankets, or clothing.

Bed in the Command Position

The command position is when you have a view of the entrance to the room, but you are not directly in line with it. The bed should be placed with the headboard against a solid wall, not in front of a window. This placement puts our reptilian brain and subconscious mind at ease because it is in the least vulnerable area of the room. You should be able to see if someone were to enter the room.

Use Mirrors Sparingly

Mirrors are activating and light reflecting and should not be placed in a position that reflects the bed. They also represent the water element that should be used sparingly in a bedroom. Mirrors in the bedroom can disrupt sleep. If you have a mirror in this position that can not be moved, simply cover it at night.

Create a Yin Space

Yin means dark, earthy, cozy, and soft. It is more passive and restful than its counterpart, yang, which is energetic and activating. Create a yin bedroom by using blackout curtains, lights on dimmer switches, cozy and soft bedding, an area rug, soft earth tones for the walls, no tv or electronics, relaxing artwork, and no sharp edges or objects pointing towards you while sleeping. Ideally, the view outside your window should support the yin bedroom space, meaning a serene and peaceful view.

Create Symmetry

Our brains love symmetry because we understand it. Symmetry is consistent and allows us to relax because it is clear where to look. The focal point of a bedroom is the bed, so use that as the foundation and build symmetry around the bed. This can be achieved with matching side tables, matching lamps, and artwork on either side of the bed. If you don’t like the matchy-matchy look, you can achieve symmetry using items with the same visual weight. Consider the scale and proportion of the items you have in your space. The furniture pieces should be appropriately sized for the size of the room.
